Business & Technology Alignment

Operations needs one thing, the system does another, and the people in between fill the gap with spreadsheets and phone calls. We connect your business goals to the systems that run dispatch, billing and settlements, so the freight floor and the back office pull in the same direction.

When the system and the business drift apart

No carrier sets out to misalign its technology. It happens slowly. The company adds dedicated accounts, starts a brokerage desk, picks up a few drayage customers, opens a terminal, or brings on owner-operators. The business changes every year. The TMS, the accounting package and the interfaces between them were configured for the company you used to be.

The result is a gap between what leadership is trying to do and what the systems can show or support. You see it in questions nobody can answer quickly:

  • Which customers and lanes actually make money after deadhead, detention and fuel?
  • How many days does it take from delivery to invoice, and why?
  • Why do dispatch and accounting report different revenue numbers for the same week?
  • Which accessorials are we performing but not billing?
  • What does each driver really cost per mile once settlements, advances and deductions are counted?
  • Why does a new customer's EDI setup take weeks instead of days?

When those answers take a week of spreadsheet work, decisions get made on gut feel. When operations asks for something and IT can't deliver it, people stop asking and build workarounds. Over time the workarounds become the real system, and the expensive software you own becomes a place to store data after the fact.

How we align business and technology

Strong Tower works from both sides of the gap. We have spent years on dispatch floors and in billing offices, and we know how freight systems work down to the database because our sister company builds one. That lets us translate between the owner who wants better margins, the operations manager who wants fewer phone calls, and the IT person who wants fewer emergencies.

1. Define what the business is trying to do

We start with leadership: growth targets, service commitments, margin goals, and the handful of numbers that tell you whether the company is winning. For one carrier that's revenue per truck per week and empty miles. For a broker it's gross margin per load and carrier on-time performance. For a private fleet it's cost per stop and service level to the stores or plants. Those numbers become the anchor for everything else.

2. Map each goal to the system and the process behind it

For every key number, we trace where the data starts, which system holds it, who touches it, and where it can go wrong. Revenue per mile depends on clean loaded and empty mileage, accurate rating, complete accessorials and on-time billing. If any link in that chain is weak, the number is wrong. This KPI-to-system mapping shows exactly where the business and the technology have separated.

3. Find and rank the gaps

Typical gaps include rating tables that no longer match customer contracts, fuel surcharge schedules updated by hand, accessorial codes nobody uses, settlement rules handled outside the system, EDI 214 status updates that don't reach the customer, ELD data that never makes it into dispatch, and reports that pull from the wrong fields. We rank each gap by its effect on revenue, cash flow, cost, risk and customer service.

4. Close the gaps

Most gaps don't need new software. They need configuration changes, cleaner master data, a process fix, a missing interface, a better report, or training. We lay out the fix, the owner and the effort for each one, and we can do the work ourselves or support your team while they do it.

5. Keep them closed

Alignment slips again without a simple way to make technology decisions. We help you set up light governance that fits a freight company: a short list of priorities, a regular review between operations, finance and whoever handles IT, and a clear rule for how new requests get evaluated. No bureaucracy, just a way to keep the systems pointed at the business.

Independent by design

Strong Tower Consulting never requires you to buy our software. Our sister company, Exspeedite, builds a TMS, and that's exactly why we know what's under the hood of yours. As our original site put it: "We are not selling you more products, rather we offer to help you get more out of your existing investment. If we don't think the answer is more licenses or features, we will tell you."

Where alignment pays off on the freight floor

Executive Strategic PriorityWhat Systems & Workflows Must Synchronize
Faster Cash & LiquidityMobile POD capture, document imaging, automated detention entry, and touchless nightly batch billing so AR aging compresses.
Protected Net MarginsMulti-tier rating tariffs, DOE fuel surcharge tables, lane costing SQL, and customer profitability reports drawing from verified data.
Maximized Asset UtilizationDispatch board planning, live ELD HOS duty clocks, and empty deadhead mile tracking directly visible to dispatchers.
Transparent Driver CompensationLoaded/empty mileage rules, stop-off pay, fuel advance reconciliation, and recurring escrow deductions configured inside core TMS.
Tier-1 Shipper ServiceAutomated EDI 204/990/214/210 translation feeds, real-time geofenced ETA tracking, and self-service document portals.
Proactive Regulatory ComplianceIntegrated DVIR defect logs, automated multi-jurisdiction IFTA fuel tax calculations, and 90-day PM maintenance schedules.

Where a gap needs deeper work, we connect it to the right practice: Business Process Optimization for workflow redesign, ELD, EDI & Back-Office Integration for interfaces, and Reporting & Business Documents for the numbers leadership needs.

Freight Business Strategy vs. IT Execution Alignment Matrix

Carrier leadership often sets strategic targets that operational software fails to support due to misconfigured rating, isolated telematics, or manual hand-offs. Strong Tower establishes architectural alignment across five foundational pillars:

Executive Freight Strategy Target Operational Metric System Alignment Architecture Departmental Drift Warning Sign Strong Tower Synchronization Protocol
Accelerate Working Capital Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) < 30 Days Touchless nightly batch billing; mobile driver POD auto-indexing; automated EDI 210 delivery. Billing clerks holding invoices waiting on physical trip envelopes from remote terminals. Deploy automated mobile POD ingestion and unbilled delivered load exception alerts.
Protect Operating Margin Fleet Operating Ratio (OR) < 92.0% Multi-matrix customer tariffs; automated weekly DOE fuel surcharge indexing; SQL lane yield analytics. Billers manually overriding rates; fuel surcharges lagging market diesel increases by 30+ days. Standardize tariff rules in TMS core; automate weekly DOE index API feeds; audit rate overrides.
Maximize Rolling Fleet Velocity Empty Deadhead Miles < 8.5% Carrier-neutral ELD integration feeding live driver HOS clocks directly into dispatch board. Dispatchers calling drivers for verbal logbook hours; assigning loads that trigger HOS violations. Implement bi-directional telematics sync with pre-dispatch automated HOS duty validation.
Retain Top Driving Talent Driver Annual Turnover < 45% Automated driver settlement engine; fuel card advance FTP reconciliation; transparent escrow ledgers. Drivers disputing Friday pay stubs; payroll spending 12+ hours manually calculating mileage splits. Automate mileage pay rules, fuel advance deductions, and generate 1-click transparent settlement stubs.
Deepen Enterprise Shipper Retention 98.5%+ On-Time Delivery / EDI Compliance Shipper tracking portal (Pipeline); outside-carrier tracking (CheckPoint). Shippers calling dispatch repeatedly for check calls; CSRs manually emailing PDF delivery receipts. Deploy self-service customer visibility portal with real-time geofenced ETAs and instant POD downloads.

How an alignment engagement runs

  1. Leadership session. We agree on the goals and the key numbers that matter, and on what success looks like at the end of the engagement.
  2. Floor-level discovery. We sit with dispatch, customer service, billing, payroll, safety and accounting to see how work actually gets done, and where the system helps or gets in the way.
  3. System review. We review configuration, master data, interfaces and reports against the goals, and trace each key number from source to report.
  4. Gap register and plan. A ranked list of gaps with the fix, owner, effort and business effect for each, reviewed with leadership.
  5. Close and govern. We fix the priority gaps or support your team in doing it, then set up the simple review process that keeps operations and technology aligned.

Our overall method is described on How We Work.

Who this is for

Owners, CFOs, operations managers and IT managers at carriers, brokerages and 3PLs, intermodal operators and private fleets, especially if:

  • Leadership can't get reliable numbers without manual spreadsheet work
  • Operations and accounting argue about whose figures are right
  • The business has changed, such as new divisions, new freight types or acquisitions, but the system setup hasn't
  • IT requests pile up with no clear way to decide what comes first
  • You're about to invest in technology and want to make sure it serves a business goal

Alignment often pairs with IT Strategy & Planning. The strategy sets the direction; alignment makes sure the systems you run every day actually follow it. For companies that want this discipline on an ongoing basis, a Fractional Freight CIO engagement keeps it in place month after month. Either way, you get a Strong Tower advisor who speaks both freight and technology.

Frequently asked questions

What does business and technology alignment mean for a carrier?

It means your systems are set up to support the way you actually run and the goals you are chasing. Every key number, like revenue per mile, deadhead, billing cycle time or on-time delivery, has a system that produces it reliably, and every technology dollar can be traced to a business priority.

How is this different from IT strategy?

IT strategy is the long-range plan for your technology. Alignment is the work of connecting that technology to day-to-day operations and business goals, finding where they have drifted apart, and putting a simple process in place so they stay together. The two often run side by side.

We do not have an IT department. Is this still for us?

Yes. In many carriers the IT function is one person, an outside provider, or the controller. Alignment work makes sure whoever handles technology is working on what the business needs most.

Will you recommend new software?

Only when the business case is there. Most alignment gaps are closed with configuration, process changes, cleaner data, better reports or a missing interface, not a new system. Our consulting never requires buying our sister company's software.

How long does an alignment engagement take?

It depends on the size of the operation and the number of systems. We scope it after an initial conversation and agree on the timeline before work starts.
